(An Overview of Lesson #4) - "I Will Serve"

November 30, 2016

An Opening Quote ( Read aloud together)

"If you do it because no one else will, it's a job If you do it to serve the Lord it's a ministry. If you do it just enough to get by, it's a job. If you do it to the best of your ability, it's a ministry.

If you quit because someone criticized you, it was a job . If you keep on doing it because you think it needs to be done, it's a ministry. It is hard to get excited about a job. It's almost impossible not to get excited about a ministry. Average churches are filled with many people doing many jobs. Great churches are filled with many people who are involved in ministry. If you are concerned just with success, it's a job. If your concern is faithfulness to God, it's a ministry. People may say, "Well done" when you do your job . The Lord will say, Well done" when you complete your ministry. - Bethany Beach Newsletter

Introduction (p. 47-48). Heather, the single mom with 3 kids went through a divorce and subsequently left the church that she'·d been a part of with her ex-husband. Now in a new congregation (The Church at Fountain Hills), her ATIITUDE changed as a result of joining a congregation that were JOYFUL about the opportunity to SERVE GOD and OTHERS. She was no longer A SELF-SERVING CHRISTIAN (concerned with me, myself and I) but now she was focused on doing for God and others. In the past, she served in ministry for LEGALISTIC REASONS, but now with anticipation and positive energy, Heather looked forward to attending worship with others and sharing in SACRIFICIAL MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES. Heather serves out of her own desire, free of a guilt trip to participate. In her own words Heather compared her old worship experience to "eating dessert all the time" - you enjoy it for a while then you eat too much of it and get sick. You long for real food!

What Would Jesus Do ? Set the scene: Jesus with His disciples, the mother of James and John (identified as "the mother of Zebedee's sons). She addresses Jesus with a desire. (See Matthew 20:21}. Jesus replies: "You really have no idea what you are asking for." The other 10 disciples got mad. Jesus called time out. (See Matthew 20:25-28 at the middle of p .49 for the King's language and see the bottom paragraph for the modern  vernacular).

Jesus offered Himself as the example of a servant. Not a political king, but a servant whose example went all the way to the cross. "He who knew no sin, became sin for us..."

The Apostle Paul in Philippians 2:3-4,5-11and 14 explained the basis for the "JOY" that comes from genuine service.

The Serving Revolution. Commit to serve and be other-focused. Refrain from negativity and complaining. Not to return to the old norm, but serving with set a new town and become the "new normal !!!"

Serving through Small Groups. From "I Want" to I Will Serve" Lesson Closing (See page 56 "It's Time")
